💎Sparkle Ridge 🦄 Unicorn Tales

From the Ground Up: How Kirstin’s Sparkle Began to Shine

A Unicorn’s Tale: The Roots of Resilience

It was another lively morning at Sparkle Ridge Farm, and the barnyard was buzzing with excitement. Phoenix trotted nervously toward Nash, who stood proudly in the center, his weathered frame steady and his eyes wise. Today’s lesson would be about beginnings—the kind that plant seeds of courage and determination.

“Phoenix,” Nash began with a twinkle in his eye, “let me take you back to a story of grit, adventure, and learning. This is the tale of how Kirstin became the remarkable woman she is today. Like all great journeys, it starts with humble beginnings.”

The First Tumble

Kirstin’s story began at just four years old. Nash described her first encounter with a horse, a spirited creature who wasn’t too thrilled with a tiny rider on its back. “She didn’t ride for long—just long enough to land on the ground,” Nash chuckled. “But even then, you could see it in her eyes: she wasn’t giving up.”

Kirstin’s parents, new to the horse world, quickly realized they had much to learn. They purchased a beautiful but inexperienced horse, not understanding the challenges that lay ahead. “They didn’t know what ‘green broke’ meant,” Nash explained, “but they learned quickly. And so did Kirstin.”

Finding Her Footing

Determined to master her craft, Kirstin began formal lessons, where she met her first true mentor. Her connection with her pony, Peter, grew, and by the age of six, she was competing in her first shows. “She was fearless, even then,” Nash told Phoenix. “But the real lessons came when she faced heartbreak.”

One Christmas, Kirstin lost Peter to colic, a devastating blow for someone so young. “She could have stopped right there,” Nash said, his voice filled with emotion. “Instead, she channeled her grief into love for her mom’s mare, Breezy. That’s where her passion for Western Pleasure began.”

The Mentors Who Made a Difference

Phoenix leaned in closer as Nash described how Kirstin sought guidance from seasoned trainers. Julie Hawk was among those who helped her hone her skills. “She started small, learning what a lead was,” Nash chuckled, “and before long, she was competing at the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show.”

Each show was a stepping stone, not just for ribbons but for lessons in discipline, perseverance, and humility. “She learned that winning wasn’t everything. It was about the bond she built with her horses and the growth she achieved with every ride,” Nash said.

Billy: A Horse and a Lifeline

When Kirstin met Billy, a green-broke gelding, her journey took on new meaning. “Billy wasn’t just a horse; he was a partner in her journey through high school and beyond,” Nash explained. “When the world felt heavy with challenges, Billy carried her—literally and figuratively.”

Billy and Kirstin became an unstoppable team, earning state trips and numerous placings at the Minnesota State 4-H Horse Show from 2013 to 2017. “He taught her that hard work, patience, and love could overcome anything,” Nash said.

A Sparkle in the Making

By the time Kirstin won WSCA Queen and Ms. Congeniality in 2017, her path was clear. “But it wasn’t just about the titles,” Nash emphasized. “Her sparkle came from within—from every challenge she overcame and every lesson she learned along the way.”

A Lesson for Phoenix

As the sun set over Sparkle Ridge Farm, Phoenix’s eyes glistened with wonder. “So, Kirstin wasn’t always the confident champion she is now?” she asked.

“No one starts as a champion,” Nash said softly. “But with every fall, every heartbreak, and every triumph, Kirstin became the woman who inspires us all. And Phoenix, you have that same sparkle inside you.”

Phoenix stood a little taller, her horn shimmering faintly in the fading light. “I think I understand now. It’s not just about the journey—it’s about who I become along the way.”

“Exactly,” Nash said, his voice warm with pride. “And this is only the beginning of your story.”
